A game of doubles …

double-standards-funny-picture

There are a lot of Double-Standards in the world.

Our culture, the product of 10,000 years of conflict, is AWASH with Double-Standards designed to make one group of people seem inferior to, less moral than, less trust-worthy, less law-abiding, etc, than the group in the Majority. Most of these double-standards were started and embraced by White people at the expense of Blacks, Asians, & Hispanics;  some are more religious-based – with ‘Christians’ embracing double-standards against those of other faiths, in particular, Muslims; And then there are loads of Double-Standards embraced by Men, and against Women. It has gone on for so long, and to such an extreme degree, that many believe a Black person, or a Hispanic can’t be a racist … or that Women can’t be sexist … (No one will ever claim that people of religion can’t be intolerant – not as long as Moslems bomb buildings and sporting events in the name of Jihad, and the Westboro Baptist Church spreads hate in God’s name.)

The truth is, though, anyone, even the most common victims of Racism, can espouse racist ideas … anyone, even the most common victims of sexism, can be sexist.  It just doesn’t get commented on as often.

Consider this phrase:  ” BLANKS  constantly degrade BLANKS!”

Fill in the first BLANK with Whites, and the second BLANK with Blacks: you get “Whites constantly degrade Blacks!”  Since about 1963, this has been a widely accepted statement against racism.  You hear it on TV. You hear it in Movies. It’s been heard on the floors of the House, and the Senate, and enshrined in the Laws of our country.

It’s also Racist.

Look, go get a freaking DICTIONARY, ok? Here’s how a widely accepted one defines the term:

racism |ˈrāˌsizəm| noun

The belief that all members of a race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, esp. so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.• prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior.

When you make broad, derogatory statements encompassing an entire race, you are, by definition, engaging in racism.  That’s not my opinion – it’s FACT.  When you apply one laudatory statement to ALL members of a race, or one derogatory statement to ALL members of a race, you are, in effect, saying “You’re all the same, and ALL of you deserve this!”

The same is true of sexism. Go back to the statement with the Blanks, and fill in ‘Men’ and ‘Women’, respectively.  You get a widely accepted, politically correct statement, which is, at the end of the day, sexist. When you apply one laudatory statement to ALL members of a gender, or one derogatory statement to ALL members of a gender, you are, in effect, saying “You’re all the same, and ALL of you deserve this!”

The same is true when you lump all muslims, all christians, all buddhists into the same bunch and blame them for something a small minority of that group did.

I believe all races should be treated equally. NOT that one race should be given an advantage, when it comes to getting a job, getting into school, or getting promoted. I believe both genders should be treated equally, and women should have the inherent right to control what happens to their bodies. I believe that getting a job, getting ahead in a job, being paid for a job, or being promoted in a job, should be about job performance – not the color of a person’s skin, their gender, their religion, their political opinions – and not based on a quota, either!

If you mean ‘racists denigrate black people’, SAY ‘racists’:  when you lump all white people together, you are being racist yourself – and I don’t deserve to be treated like a racist.  If you mean ‘sexists denigrate women’, then freaking SAY so: when you lump all men together, you are being sexist – and I don’t deserve that sort of treatment, either!

Do you even know who’s on your side?
